Our Town
Acclaimed David Cromer staging of Thornton Wilder's Our Town has arrived at the Barrow Street Theatre, the downtown venue whose space has been completely redesigned for this production.
This production marks the official debut collaboration between Jean Doumanian Productions and Barrow Street Theatre who recently announced a creative partnership to bring innovative works and artists to Off Broadway, and will take place during the 70th anniversary year of Our Town’s Broadway premiere (Pulitzer Prize, 1938). The two companies are currently collaborating on Barrow Street Fortnight2, a three-week celebration of new improv, sketch comedy, music and solo shows, currently running at the downtown venue.
Best of 2008 David Cromer has directed some distinguished productions in his career, but his brilliantly revisionist and astounding new production of Thornton Wilder's is his masterwork to date. In the jaw-dropping third act, which makes some truly shocking and inspired conceptual choices that are best experienced without foreknowledge, I found myself speaking the words Oh, my God to no one. Cancel whatever you're doing tonight and go and see this show. - Chris Jones, The Chicago Tribune
Best of 2008 There is a wondrous simplicity and nakedness about this production as it spins a blazingly intense yet sharply satiric story of two small-town, middle-class American families whose destinies become intertwined. This production should travel the globe. It would be a far better ambassador of American values than any stiff-necked consular official. - Hedy Weiss, Chicago Sun-Times
